Murtoa’s BIG Weekend

Murtoa’s Big Weekend is the biggest annual event on the Murtoa calendar, which draws people from near and far.

The Big Weekend is held annually over 3 days during the first weekend of October and features The Heritage Listed Stick Shed which will open for public viewing and special events during the Big Weekend.

Other attractions over the weekend include the Murtoa Cup Races, the Dunmunkle Sumpoiler’s Historic Engines display and rally, a Lake Market, the Murtoa A&P Agricultural Show, a Show’n’Shine and many other activities.

Each year a new feature is added to Murtoa’s Big Weekend to excite the community and visitors. For example in 2015, The Dressmaker author, Rosalie Ham and producer of the hit film, Sue Maslin attended the Big Weekend Opening Night and were judges of a 1950s dress up competition. Rosalie and Sue both happily signed copies of The Dressmaker novel for delighted attendees.

Murtoa’s Big Weekend also provides an excellent opportunity for all to experience the beautiful natural features of the town, namely Lake Marma and Rabl Park, as well as Murtoa’s historic attractions such as The Water Tower Museum, Concordia Cottage and Railway Station,  and others.

Horse Racing

Located at the southern edge of town near Lake Marma, the Murtoa Race Course is another one of Murtoa’s historic institutions. Established in February 1879 racing has been an integral part of the town’s life for the last 120 years.

With beautifully maintained all-weather track it provides a wonderful summer and winter training and racing facility for the Wimmera region. Murtoa hosts two racing events each year.

The Murtoa Cup event, held in early October to coincide with Murtoa’s BIG Weekend, kicks off the Country Cup Race Meetings in the region. It has been a favourite Wimmera Racing event for many years and is very popular for family reunions and bus trips from around Victoria.

The Murtoa Racing Club also hosts Industry TAB meeting during July.
